Music Therapy Out and About

Music therapy is central to our mission at NMTS. With a dedicated team of five board-certified music therapists, surveys show that 90% of those we serve benefit from music therapy. While most of our individual therapy sessions occur at our facility, the majority of our group sessions are conducted in the community through partnerships with over a dozen different agencies. No matter the setting, our music therapists harness the power of music to enhance the lives of thousands throughout northern Nevada.

In the Hospital
At Renown, a teenage patient was receiving care following a suicide attempt. During her session with the music therapist, she learned chord shapes and strumming techniques on the guitar. Midway through the session, she opened up about her attempt and discussed her potential next steps towards healing. The act of making music with the therapist helped her relax, lowered her inhibitions, and created a safe space for her to express and process her feelings. As the session concluded, the patient expressed her gratitude by writing “thank you” with a heart on the therapist’s hand.

In the Detention Center
NMTS music therapists conduct five weekly groups in the mental health units of the Washoe County jail. These groups offer a chance to develop social skills and learn coping strategies for managing anger, depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues. During the groups, members play instruments, share feelings, and, importantly, sing together. Research shows that singing can release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and serotonin, and foster connections. Equipping people with these tools is essential for enhancing their mental health and improving their chances of success when they return to the community.
