Where Music Meets Science.

Entering the next phase

It’s time to dream big for the outside!

NMTS has begun planning how to best use our three acres to serve the needs of our participants, families, partners, and the community. Our outdoor space will be full of beautiful trees, spaces for gathering, and of course a band shell for summer performances. Our plans are not yet finalized, but we are getting very excited about all that is coming.

Thank you for your support!

Thanks to our amazing community, NMTS’ new home at 2590 Orovada Street in Reno is almost fully renovated. And with our increased capacity and beautiful new space, NMTS is quickly becoming a regional center for health and music.

Stay tuned for updated pictures and video tours!

Where are we?

  • Every note, every dance step here at NMTS is possible thanks to our generous community of donors and foundations. Thank you!

Donors who gift $5,000 and above will have their name commemorated on a beautiful art installation by Leilani Schweitzer. This recognition element will reflect the many diverse, passionate, and influential individuals and organizations that helped bring this new building to life.

For foundations and major donors, there are many naming opportunities inside and out the NMTS facility. Naming opportunities begin at gifts of $50,000.

All donors towards the building, regardless of the size of the gift, will be honored in the lobby of the building! With your giving, you become part of the NMTS legacy. Your donation will be improve the well-being of our community for years to come. Every song that is sung and every note that is played, every smile and every dance move will be your legacy.

  • Why is it important to undertake this project now?

    • NMTS has grown from one part-time music therapist serving 12 people in 2003 to five therapists and two adaptive instructors serving just under 2,000 people in 2022. But 2,000 people a year is just the tip of the iceberg.

    • Washoe County census data estimates 54,000 people with significant disabilities, 8,745 children and adults with severe cognitive impairments, 4,715 children and adults with autism, and 25,264 people with serious mental health issues. Census data also shows:

    • 8,500 individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease

    • 7,500 individuals living with a disability-related to brain injury

    • 1,130 people experience a stroke each year

    • 1,070 people living with Parkinson’s disease

    • With additional space, we will be able to expand programs and partnerships to meet the growing needs for these populations and more.

Are your programs expanding as you anticipated?
In the first year at our new location, we have expanded on-site programs by 93%. Once the programming space remodel is complete, we anticipate 20% growth this year. We are on track to reach our goal of serving a total of 5,000 people per year in 2026.

Can NMTS really afford a building?

Yes! NMTS has diversified and strong revenue streams through program and contract service fees, as well as grants and donations. In addition, maintaining the building will cost less than continuing to rent space would have been. These costs will largely be covered by rental revenue.

Sharing our vision

In many states, music therapy only available through hospitals, schools, or other institutions. At NMTS, we know music therapy can have profound effects on people and communities as a whole. That is why we are creating a regional center for music and health where everyone can access adaptive music and music therapy services in a safe, accessible, and welcoming space.

At NMTS, we are a:
Barrier-free facility
National model for community-based music therapy
Organization that values and welcomes diversity in all of its facets
