2022

Hello –

The last month has been full of changes. We moved into our new forever home on July 1, and vacated our old space at McKinley Arts and Culture Center on July 29th. So in the midst of packing, moving, and setting up, I had a few weeks of going back and forth between the past and the future. McKinley holds so many personal and professional memories for me. Both my children and the organization literally grew up in that building! So it has been a bittersweet and emotional transition. I was a little worried that the adjustment might be difficult for some of our participants who’ve been at McKinley since the beginning. But last week, as I was chatting with parents while listening to the laughter coming from one of the classrooms, I knew that it would all be okay. There have been a few bumps, and we have a long road of renovations ahead of us, but NMTS has a home. A space for people of all ages and abilities to come together through music. A place for our community to experience inclusion, creativity, and joy.

It has taken a village, and we will be reaching out for support a lot over the next couple of years, but together we have taken the first step. Together we will create a legacy that will benefit all of us for decades to come. And speaking of our village, we are thrilled to announce that longtime supporter the Stillwater Foundation has committed to matching $100,000 in from the community. So if you want to be part of the legacy and double your impact, now is the time! Please visit our Match for Music page for more information on how your donation can have twice the impact. And as always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Thank you!

Supporter Of The Month - Kate Kirkpatrick

From your perspective, how has NMTS changed over the years? What impact have you seen it have on our community?

I've been involved with NMTS for more than a decade, and I've seen incredible growth--both in the organization and in the recognition of the hugely positive effects music therapy can have for participants of all backgrounds. From the growth in services provided in our regional hospitals, to the Lullaby Project, the Bluebird radio show, and the quick adaptation to online services for those who can't come in person... to name a few! There truly is a way for NMTS to serve people of all ages and in all places. Now the organization is at the precipice of the next big chapter: a new building. I can't wait to see what growth comes with this new space.

What impact has NMTS had in your life?

At first, as a board member, I sought to advocate for music in our community, and to provide services to those who need it. It was also a way to honor my husband's family, since his brother could have really benefited from services like NTMS provides, but he passed away before the organization was formed. But during the pandemic, as I fought mentally with a high-stress job and the effects of being shut-in and never leaving the house, I joined NMTS in a new way... as a participant. I joined a Music and Wellness Workshop, which helped me to learn to use music to reduce stress in a thoughtful, focused way. To this day, our group continues to meet, and I don't know what I would do without it.

What attracted you to join the advisory board and governance committee?

The advisory board and governance committees speak to me as a way to give back to NMTS and help to provide guidance and support in ways that the board itself may be too busy to focus on. It may seem funny to some, but for me, it's always exciting to help with creating new policies, recruiting new board members, and helping to provide support to NMTS and its hard-working staff.

You were our first individual donor for the capital campaign, thank you! What are you excited about with the expansion?

Literally everything about the expansion is exciting to me. When I was chair of the board a few years ago, we did some strategic planning work where this type of expansion was a glimmer in our eyes, but it seemed like a huge task that may not be achievable for quite some time. Now the building is a real place, providing real services, and it seems like there are endless ideas for serving participants in existing and new ways. I am in awe of the work that Manal, Sarah, Wendy, and the entire NMTS staff has done to get us to this place.

Where do you see NMTS in 10 years?

I have no doubt that in 10 years, NMTS will still be innovating creative new ways to provide services to participants. I'm guessing the new building will be full of success stories, hope, and most of all: music.

Music Therapy Moments

Veronica was on the Neurosciences Unit of Renown Hospital after having a stroke during a routine surgery that left her with paralysis on her left side. Veronica felt pretty hopeless and discouraged by everything that happened. The nursing staff on the asked that I see her for music therapy. It turned out that Veronica had been a singer and guitar player her entire life. Her enthusiasm about music therapy was amazing. Her left hand was not functional, but her right hand was, so we decided to try playing together. In subsequent visits, I did the left-hand fingering for the chords to some of her favorite songs and even a couple of her original songs. She was thrilled and more importantly, she felt hope for the future again. The physician’s assistant in charge of her case sought me ought to thank me for my work with her and told me that after she had the first MT session with me she was like a new person. The PA told me, "I just wanted you to know how important your work is, how much you helped Veronica and how much we value having music therapy (at Renown)".

As you can hear Victoria say at the end of the video, music therapist Sharon is "Awesome!"
